UPM (Universal Point Metric)
The Expert Sports' cross-sport yardstick: house value above a player's own-sport replacement level.
UPM — the Universal Point Metric — is how The Expert Sports ranks players across its 44 sports on one board. It answers a deliberately narrow question: how much more is this player worth than a replacement-level player in his own sport?
UPM = trade value − replacement value, where replacement value is the house value at rank ⌈0.75 × pool size⌉ of the sport's redraft list.
Every input comes from the site's own published data: the player's rank, the house trade value curve (1000 × 0.987(rank − 1)), and the size of his sport's pool. No cross-sport statistics are invented — a basketball player's UPM and a golfer's UPM are computed by the identical rule from their own boards. The UPM board shows the top 100 players across all 44 sports plus each sport's own top five, and it is refreshed from the same daily data files as the rankings.
UPM is a form of value over replacement, and it inherits that measure's honest quirk: in a deep pool the replacement rank sits far down the value curve, so replacement value approaches zero and elite players in big-pool sports post the largest UPMs. That is a property of the definition — printed on the board, not buried — and it is why UPM should be read as "dominance over his own sport's replacement level," not as a claim that one sport's athletes are simply better than another's.
